Sadler Close MUGA is a community sports space on the Sadler Close estate in the heart of Mitcham, South London. The project was delivered in collaboration with the young people from the estate. Funded by Clarion Futures Communities (the charitable foundation within Clarion Housing Group) the project formed part of a wider Community Ambassador Programme.
A series of creative engagement activities underpinned the design process. These began with door-to-door outreach to ensure residents were informed, invited to participate, and able to share their views. Workshops followed, giving young residents the chance to explore proposals, develop skills, and influence the space they would ultimately use. Sessions included a photography and walking workshop around Mitcham, as well as co-design workshops at Shine Youth Group, Mitcham Library, and directly on the Sadler Close estate MUGA itself.
In total, 12 young residents and 5 parents, carers, or family members participated in the workshops or painting stages, alongside two Clarion apprentices who supported the site's transformation. The outreach stage reached over 30 young people and parents, fostering a strong sense of ownership and pride in the final design.
