Mitcham Market Banners
The Mitcham Market Banners is a community-led public-realm project by POoR Collective, developed in collaboration with OP.X and commissioned by Merton Council. Installed across Mitcham Town Centre in South West London, the project transformed everyday street infrastructure into a celebration of local identity.
POoR hosted a co-design workshop in Mitcham Town Centre, where residents of all ages were encouraged to draw items they would like to see sold at Mitcham Market. These drawings and ideas became the foundation of the final banner designs. The workshops created an accessible and playful way for people to contribute to the future image of their local area.
The final outcome consists of 16 vibrant banners installed on lamp posts throughout the market area and town centre. The banners celebrate Mitcham’s diversity, local culture, and aspirations, helping to create a more welcoming and visually engaging public environment. One banner also recognises the names of participating residents, reinforcing the project’s collective authorship and civic pride.
