London Museum Studios is the transformation of a former call centre above Smithfield Market into a warm, vibrant community hub and workspace for the London Museum.
The design was developed through a collaborative co-design process involving young people from the London Museum’s Next Generation Creatives youth group, members of the London Museum team, and local community members, including nearby residents. These groups helped articulate how the space is used day to day, the needs of different users, and the types of community facilities required. A series of co-design workshops shaped a clear and shared brief, defining zones of activity, circulation, wayfinding, and the overall look and feel of the space.
Flexibility sits at the heart of the design. Based on multiple use scenarios identified during the workshops, the space can be easily adapted for a range of working, creative, and community activities through bespoke furniture and curtain systems that allow spaces to be reconfigured as needed. As the studios are located away from the main public routes, a clear wayfinding strategy was developed, building on the London Museum’s existing branding to help users navigate and feel welcomed.
The final layout includes a welcoming arrival space, a dedicated office for London Museum staff, a prayer and sensory room, and a series of flexible workshop and meeting rooms designed to support a wide range of users and activities.
