Beneath The Surface
Beneath The Surface is a globe created as part of The World Reimagined project. TWR is a powerful national art project that aimed to transform how we understand the Transatlantic Slave trade and its impact. A total of 103 unique globes were created across the UK that explore the history and legacy of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Beneath The Surface celebrates the contributions people of the African diaspora have made in Camden. POoR teamed up with the local community to develop a globe design that carefully speaks to the local Black community. The globe encompasses key Black people from the area such as Beryl Gilroy, Camden’s first Black headteacher; the borough’s new mayor Sabrina Francis; and Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya. Vibrant colours are juxtaposed against a bold background where silhouettes of key moments in Camden’s Black history can be found. The globe was situated at St Pancras International station before moving to Trafalgar Square. Currently, it can be found at Swiss Cottage Library in London.
